Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can you use wood boards?

You can use ANY 5 boards (wood or plastic), that are 1” or thinner.

The only issue with almost every breaking machine is the space between the arms. When you break boards and push them into the machine you have to consider that you are doubling the thickness of what you are breaking and pushing it into the space between the arms ALONG with width of your foot. The space is limited.

This is why if you wish to test your power breaking skill it is best to use Plastic or Re-breakable boards of greater resistance than wood but the thickness stays small enough to fit into the machine when broken. A bonus is the consistency you don’t get with wood. Plus it is environmentally friendly.

We recommend the Ultimate Martial Art Board for classroom use. They are much quicker to use than the standard tongue and groove boards, quickly fit the pieces together, bang it on the floor or wall to completely close it and you are ready to go. They seem to last forever too!!

  2. Can you use plastic boards that don’t have rubber backing?

Yes however, after the first board you will need to add 3/4” Vinyl Bumpers (purchased from Home Depot or similar store), to the back of the boards (in the corners) to prevent them from slipping and sliding. Wood boards do not need this as they already have enough friction to hold them in place against each other.

The machine comes with non-slip tabs to be mounted on the machine to prevent the first board from slipping and sliding.
  3. What are the 2 extra pieces for that are in the bags with the large plastic nuts?

They are there in case you break off a piece of the “fingers” that grip the pole and tightening the nuts no longer locks the machine in position.

If this happens break the rest of the “fingers” off then slide the pole through the machine as usual and slip the hard plastic ring with the split in it over the pole down to the machine followed by the large plastic nut and tighten to lock into place as usual. The soft rubber ring can also be used to increase friction. If necessary it goes on in between the hard plastic split ring and the large plastic nut.
  4. Why do I need to add the nuts and bolts when breaking more than one board?

The bolts are there to prevent the arms from compacting then flexing under impact and separating from the machine under higher impacts.
The bolts are also there in case to hold the arms in place in case you break off the quick-connect tabs.
  5. Do you have any suggestions on how I can make better use of the machine in my school?
    1. Leave the poles up and only remove the machine for quick set up and take down.
    2. Use the top spring clip and replace the bottom spring clip by cutting a hole in the “puzzle mats” for the bottom of the pole to fit into. This way there is no spring clip for students to bump their shins into.
    3. Buy an extra set of poles and extend the height enough that students can’t bump into the top spring clip and glue the pole sections together (except 1) using a construction adhesive (PL). Or buy a solid pole that is 7/8th” in outside diameter that is as tall as you wish.
  6. How much does it cost to ship?

Shipping costs depends on where you live. It will cost more to ship to Hawaii then to ship to New York.

For the best value on shipping in the US order from www.UMAB.com.
  7. Is there a warranty?

Yes we will replace the any item that breaks due to a fault in the manufacturing or shipping within 30 days of shipping.

The machine and it's parts have been extensively tested and we know that even under extreme use (if used properly) the machine will not break. Watch the bricks and sledgehammer break at the end of the introduction video to see the impact the machine can take. The return process is for you to send a clear photo to us by email with an explanation of how the item became defective and if we determine that it was a defect we will send you a replacement piece free of charge.
  8. Do I need to tighten the big plastic nuts as much as possible?

No this will actually damage your machine.

Because there are 2 nuts that together keep the machine in place you do not need to over tighten them. You should be able to lock your machine in place using your thumb and first 2 fingers. Lightly tighten the top nut then the bottom one, and if necessary return and tighten the top one a little more. Over tightening can actually damage your machine.
  9. What is the difference between the student/personal and the school/commercial units?

    There are TWO differences:
    1. Poles

The student unit comes with the lightweight poles, and the original base.

The Commercial unit comes with both the lightweight AND the heavy duty poles.

Commercial units are usually left up and ready to use, therefore the poles are continually under load. Overtime it was found that the lightweight poles “mushroom” out at the connection points, making height adjustments difficult. This also occurred when the unit is being used for “power breaking”.The “heavy duty” poles alleviate this issue.
    2. Reinforced Compression Fittings.

(The part under the locking nut on the pole that “Squeezes” the pole and locks the unit to whatever height you choose.)

Students in schools were continually OVER tightening the locking nuts and causing the compression fittings to lose their locking ability. The reinforced ends ensure the commercial unit will last longer and take the abuse that non-owners tend to inflict on other peoples property.
